We have tried to be responsible members of the community during the pandemic by remaining close to home. Cabin fever does occasionally overcome us, and we gave ourselves permission yesterday to take a drive to the Pacific coast and back to memorialize the last hours of a difficult year, planning a drive-thru burger and a jaunt on foot down the beach to toss a rock into the surf before returning home to hope for a better New Year.

We made Ocean ShoresOcean Shores, Washington our destination. With a really tasty burger for lunch from Lighthouse Drive In in Aberdeen to fuel the final few miles, once forced to turn left or right, we drove directly to a favorite wide spot in the road on Point Brown¹ to stop for a stroll. The beach is at the jetty on the north entrance to Grays Harbor, and the surf yesterday was awesome. Just seeing and hearing the waves made the trip well worth the time taken, and a day spent together looking forward to new adventures left no doubt that getting out of the house was a fine choice.

  • My copy of Place Names of Washington makes no mention of Point Brown, yet covers Point Chehalis, which is the cape several thousand feet over the water at the south entrance to the harbor. The USGS certainly recognizes Point Brown as a feature of the landscape.Point Brown, WA
