In these La Nina winters, those of us in the Puget Sound basin who hope to see at least a bit of snow in the back yard each year expect satisfaction. After weeks of disappointment since the solstice, today our patience is being rewarded. February has lately been the month for snow in our neighborhood.
Our home in the Lake Washington/Cedar River watershed(PDF) is situated along one of the streams
that feed the lake. We enjoy it throughout the year, but today the snow has made it particularly lovely to pause and observe the water as it splashes by. With the equinox soon to follow, this is very probably the only snow we will see here this winter,
as our weather will remain wet as always but too warm for more snow until a winter yet to come.
Update February 22, 2023
The trend for snow in February was broken in 2022 when there was no snow in our back yard that month, but today February has regained its status as the month for winter snow in the eastern Puget Sound region.
We have ended up with an optimistic inch of snow on the ground in our back yard this morning, but it counts.
