There is a low‐clearance train trestle in Durham, North Carolina, with which inattentive drivers of overheight vehicles collide with sufficient frequency that, since 2008, a web site has existed dedicated to presenting footage of those crashes from nearby cameras: 11 Foot 8 Videos. I will occasionally visit that site to see the latest wreckage, prompted usually by having driven beneath the railroad trestle with an 11' 6" clearance in my own neighborhood.
The nearby trestle shows plain evidence of having been struck by overheight vehicles, but I had not ever witnessed such an event. Until Friday, when the driver of a Waste Management truck decided to give it a try and ended up attracting plenty of attention from both the local police and fire departments.
It was puzzling at first that a response by the Fire Department was warranted until learning that the truck was powered by liquid natural gas stored in a tank mounted on the top of the vehicle, which had been torn loose as the driver jammed it beneath the trestle. That’ll do it.
